How prepare and eat surströmming

Have you ever heard about surströmming? Surströmming ("soured (Baltic) herring") is a northern Swedish delicacy consisting of fermented Baltic herring. Surströmming is sold in cans, which when opened release a strong smell. Because of the smell, the dish is often eaten outdoors. Read more in wikipedia about .

When Manu, Nestor and me went to Skellefteå, in order to visit Lisa, her family offer us Surströmming. They showed us the way to eat properly this typical Swedish dish

Ingredients:
  • Tunnbröd (thin bread)
  • Mandelpotatis (almond potatoes)
  • Smör(butter)
  • Lök(onion)
  • Surströmming(soured herring)


1. Open the can

2. Peeling the boiled potatoes

3. Spread butter over Tunnbröd

4. Smash the potatoes and put it over the butter

5. Cut Surströmming in small pieces and add them

6. Cut onion in small pieces and add them

7. Eat!

i will never forget the smell of surströmming in my apartment.
Though never had a chance try, the can remained on balcony until may :)
But at least i know now how it is going to be prepared
I also remember the awful smell of that thing... I never tasted it, but people who did, said it tasted just "a little" bit better than it smelled (meaning awful too)... Is that true?

Ivan, the opening of the can in your corridor was a big mistake in that moment but a funny memory

Hector, it tastes quite good! It is just salt fish, no strange taste. The smell is complety different from the taste! I wish you a chance to eat it

I can guaratee that the taste is quite good.
I also remember Lisa's father openning the can far away from us.
It was a really good experience.
